Our Mission

River Valley Special Rec creates inclusive opportunities for people with special needs to have fun and find fulfillment.

In partnership with our member districts, we design programs for children, teens, and adults that support personal development, social engagement, and community participation. We make recreation, connection, and personal growth accessible to everyone!

Our Motto

Our tagline, Fun Included, reflects the heart of who we are—fun is built into every program we offer. It speaks to our commitment to inclusivity, ensuring each participant and family feels welcomed, valued, and part of our community. At River Valley Special Rec, we strive to remove barriers so every participant can experience recreation that is joyful, meaningful, and truly accessible.

Our Structure

Since 1988, we have been creating fun, inclusive recreational opportunities for individuals with special needs. River Valley Special Rec was founded through a partnership between the Bourbonnais Township, Limestone, and Kankakee Valley Park Districts, with a shared mission to make programs accessible to everyone.

Each district contributes funding to support programs that promote joy, growth, and community. This cooperative approach is guided by a special levy passed by the Illinois General Assembly, providing the legal foundation for special recreation services in Illinois.
